Connecting countries with special needs to international supply chains.

 



Despite improvements in transport infrastructure development and transport facilitation in recent years, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States in Asia and the Pacific continue to face challenges in accessing regional and global markets. Landlocked developing countries could benefit from better leveraging the use of new technologies in transit operations and scaling up cooperation along international railway corridors. Small island developing States need to combine national reforms with regional collaborative schemes to increase their maritime connectivity.

  Launch of Decade of Sustainable Transport , 10 December 2025, UNHQ New York In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first ever United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport to start in 2026. The launch of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport will consist of an opening, a high-level segment, showcase of voluntary commitments, and an interactive multi-stakeholder roundtable. It will launch the Implementation Plan, which was developed by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in collaboration with the Regional Commissions and in consultation with Member States , the UN system and all other relevant stakeholders . Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2023, the General Assembly declared the first ever United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport to start in 2026. While there is no single dedicated Sustainable Development Goal for transport, it is reflected in several SDG targets and recognized as an enabler for achieving many of the goals. Both the political appreciation of sustainable transport as well as our scientific understanding of transport’s linkages , both synergies and trade-offs, with issues such as resilient infrastructure development, food security, economic growth, trade, global supply chains, promotion of health, energy efficiency and tackling of climate change have greatly improved in the last years. Implementing rail corridor coordination mechanisms.

  Corridor coordination mechanisms can be very beneficial for promoting international rail transport in the landlocked developing countries in Asia. These mechanisms are instrumental in finding concrete solutions to physical and nonphysical barriers to freight flows along corridors. They help to monitor corridor performance, identify existing challenges and possible new markets and engage all stakeholders, including the private sector and all border control agencies, in creating solutions for logistics inefficiencies.  Accordingly, the  ESCP secretariat, with the financial support of the Islamic Development Bank and in partnership with the Economic Cooperation Organization, is implementing a study on the commercialization of the railway corridor connecting Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
